Praying Mantis
(Mantis religiosa)
The praying mantis is long and thin, so when it sits on green plants it looks just like the leaves and stems. It sits very still.

When an insect comes nearby, the mantis reaches out and grabs it with its front legs. The mantis will only eat live insects. Its compound eyes are very sharp.
The mantis is so fast; it can catch a mosquito.
Can you catch a mosquito with your hand?
After the mantis eats, it cleans its face like a cat.
Being green helps the praying mantis catch insects, and it also protects the mantis from animals that might eat it. Birds, lizards and snakes will eat the mantis. But they don't see it.
It's invisible!
