American Alligator
(Alligator mississippiensis)
The American Alligator lives in freshwater rivers, marshes and swamps. It is found from North Carolina to Texas. Alligators are common in Florida and Louisiana.
Alligators have big mouths, but they only eat once or twice a month. Their favorite food is fish, but they also eat turtles, crabs and shorebirds. An alligator floats in the water with only its head showing until a fish or animal comes nearby. In a flash, it grabs the animal in its jaws and swallows it whole. Alligators look scary, but they rarely bother humans.
When dinosaurs roamed the Earth, relatives of alligators lived in the swamps and marshes. They survived the extinction of dinosaurs, and today alligators and crocodiles live around the world.
