How to Particpate in
The Sunflower Prize

  1. Sunflower Prize 2009 is an activity for New Mexico students in grades 4-8.
  2. Call or e-mail Earth’s Birthday Project to request a Sunflower Prize student pack:
             1-800-698-4438
             info@earthsbirthday.org.
    Be sure to give us your name, grade, and complete address. We will mail the kit to you within a few days. The pack includes a petri dish, four sunflower seeds, a simple science journal, and complete instructions.
  3. Sprout at least two sunflower seeds following the instructions in the kit.
  4. Observe, collect data, and document your observations in the science journal (data are facts or answers to questions).
  5. Mail your journal with entry form to:

When we receive your journal, we’ll send a certificate honoring your participation in Sunflower Prize 2009. See below for a description of cash prizes!

Prizes

Everyone Wins and the Earth Does Too!

Your entry will trigger a donation from Earth’s Birthday Project’s conservation partners—the American Bird Conservancy, Nature & Culture International, and World Land Trust-US—to help purchase and protect an acre of endangered rainforest. Top entries will also win cash prizes!
  • Four $100 Prizes for Students
  • Four $25 Prizes for Sponsoring Teachers

Judges will select top entries based on the scope of observation, amount of detail and amount of detail recorded, range of data collected, and data analysis. Prizes will be awarded in fall 2009. Sorry! We cannot return your science journal.
