• Make sure they know the definition of each word
• Work alone to write a paragraph or a short essay about the animal or tree using at least half of the words
• Work together to write a poem or story about the animal or tree using at least half of the words
• Draw pictures to illustrate their poems and stories
• Choose one student from their group to present the poem or story to the whole class

• Pass out quizzes for an open-book or take-home test. OR
• Ask students to put away dictionaries and information sheets. Pass out quizzes. Allow 10 or 15 minutes for students to fill in all the blanks. Then have them trade papers and write corrections on each other's quizzes as you go over the answers together.
