Teachers > Four Ways to Use the Study Guides

Select the method that suits your students best.

1. Reading Guide. Give students the guide at the same time you pass out the handouts. Tell them to read the guide first and answer the questions as they read the handout.

2. Open Book Test. After students have had a chance to read the handout, pass out the guide and ask them to fill in answers. Allow them to refer back to the handout for answers they're not sure about.

3. Pop Quiz. After students have read the handout, surprise them with a quiz. Ask them to clear their desks and answer questions form memory. Go over answers together when everyone has finished and let students correct their own. Do they feel confident that they know the answers now?

4. Test. Tell students that they will be tested after they have read the handout. Have them take it home to study it over night. The next morning, clear desks and pass out the guide. Allow ten to twenty minutes for the test (a little longer for tests that include essay questions). Collect tests, grade, and return to students. Go over answers together.

To make a harder test: Add a few more essay questions from materials that students have studied in class. For example, add questions from your life-science or social studies text books or make up a few word problems with rainforest themes.
