Teachers > Dwarf African Frogs

African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) are among the easiest amphibians to keep as pets. They are also a good choice for a classroom aquarium, providing lots of opportunity for observation and study.

WHAT YOU'LL NEEDif you want to give African dwarf frogs a home in your classroom--

A 1.5 gallon aquarium
Aquarium gravel and a few plants (for example, elodea, sagittaria or ludwigia)
Water purifying solution
Frog food: frog pellets (HBH Frog and Tadpole Bites work nicely)
or live or frozen blood worms and/or brine shrimp

All of these are inexpensive and available at your local pet store.

Optional to improve your frog habitat: a filter and some small snails to help keep water clean, some small rocks or other accessories.

BEST SOURCES FOR FROGS:

Dwarf frogs usually cost between $2.50 and $3.50 each.

Some pet stores recommend live food for dwarf frogs, but we have found this to be unnecessary. Our year-old frogs are thriving on HBH Frog and Tadpole Bites.
