| Gardens > Activity 17 Sunflower Birthday Party for the Earth Grades preK through 6 Materials: Sunflower wind streamers (optional); flower songs; sunflower seeds to plant or take home; refreshments. Younger students may like to "plant" their paper tulips. Easy Instructions: Have a party on Earth Day - April 22, May Day or the last day of school. As you prepare for your party, think of all the wonderful things the Earth gives everyone every day. Think of the gifts you most enjoy -- sunshine, animals, trees, blue sky, rainy nights, clean air and pure water, food, home. Then think of gifts that you can give back -- knowledge and understanding, gardens, careful use and recycling, appreciation, love, songs, protection. Plant sunflowers as a wonderful present for the Earth. Hang your sunflower streamers where they can catch the spring breeze or plant tulips near your classroom windows. Sing flower songs and sing happy birthday to the Earth. Play music on a portable CD player and dance to celebrate. Invite parents to provide refreshments -- lemonade and cupcakes with yellow icing are fun -- and help plant sunflowers seeds. If there is no good place at your school for sunflowers, send a seed packet home with each child -- an Earth's birthday party favor. Students may plant their seeds to grow a magical sunflower garden house -- the perfect place to get away from school!
