It's a Party!
Party invitations: pop-up or poetic
All ages Activity = Language Arts, Art

Your invitations will need to include the date, time, and location of the party, and the reason for the celebration - it's the Earth's Birthday! Here are two ways to make your party invitations stand out from all others.

Pop-up invitations: Boing! Open the card, and up jumps a butterfly! Kids love to make, and play with, pop-up cards.

Materials Needed: Construction paper; Crayons; Paints; Scissors; Glue/glue sticks; Markers.

Use one of the butterfly models as a template (found on pages 19 - or create your own!), and have students decorate with glitter, crayons or paint. You'll need to supervise making and attaching the accordion fold to the card and the butterfly. Write the invitation specifics on the front (outside) of the card, and install the "surprise" on the inside of the card, for readers to discover when they open it up!

Poetic invitations-Using Haiku
Use Haiku as poetic illustration for your party invitations, or do a poetry "reading" at your butterfly release event. Draw a picture to go with your poem. Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry that usually focuses on nature. The Haiku format is three lines-with a specific number of syllables in each line. To write Haiku, you need to count syllables.

Line 1 = 5 syllables

Line 2 = 7 syllables

Line 3 = 5 syllables

Here are some examples of Haiku. Make up your own!

A Painted Lady (5 syllables)
Emerges to warm sunlight (7 syllables)
Stretches wings and flies (5 syllables)
Thistle and nectar (5 syllables)
Delicious treats for insects (7 syllables)
Nature's offerings (5 syllables)
Happy birthday Earth! (5 syllables)
I will set butterflies free (7 syllables)
As my gift to you. (5 syllables)

Who do you invite to your Earth's birthday party?
How about other classrooms and teachers, school staff (cafeteria workers, janitors, volunteer helpers), newspaper reporters, and parents! Use the invitation to parents print-out. Make copies to paste inside your handmade invitations.

Send invitations home with children, and hand-deliver the others during school hours.
