Apply what you learned from Super Observer (page 38) and your planting experience (page 36) to become a butterfly naturalist! From the clues you've gathered, go on a butterfly hunt - looking for butterflies in the field.

Materials Needed: Pencil; Paper.
(Optional: magnifying glass and binoculars)
Watching tips:
Keep records of any and all butterflies, moths, or caterpillars you happen to see. Notice and write about:
Color, size, and shape
Plants they were near
What they were doing
Time, date, and approximate outdoor temperature
Keep a journal of your observations.
See if you can identify different species.
Do this enough and you can become an amateur
lepidopterist - a scientist
who specializes in the study of butterflies!
