The Outdoor Classroom
Indoor Planting Activity
All ages Activity = Science, Math, Language Arts

This activity works best if you divide the classroom into groups, with 3-5 children in each group. In this project, your classroom will be able to observe the germination process of different seeds up close. Some things to talk about with your students:
  • Let's identify the different parts of a flower plant.
  • What do you expect to happen to the seeds?
  • What do you think the roots will look like?
  • How do you think the plants will be different from each other? How will they be the same?

The Indoor Garden/Planting Recipe
Materials Needed: Clear plastic cups-1 cup per group; Recycled paper towels (white works better than brown) -
1 towel per group; Soil; Seeds; Water.

Directions:
1. Line each cup with one paper towel (with tips of the paper towel sticking up in air).

2. Fill the cup with soil.

3. Place seeds - 2 of each kind - between paper towel and the side of the cup so you can see them.

4. Water the soil in your cup until saturated.

5. Check cups daily to watch for changes. Expect the germination for the seeds in your seed packet to take approximately 14 days.

6. Make projections about when you think your seeds will sprout.

  • If the average germination time is 14 days, how do your seeds compare?
  • Draw your seeds after 1 week, 2 weeks, and 3 weeks.

7. When your plants are about 5 inches tall transplant them into an indoor container or outside in your butterfly garden (after last frost). It's OK to plant the flower, soil and paper towel - the paper towel will compost itself into the soil.

You can supplement this project with other kinds of seeds - sunflowers and corn are especially fun to watch grow!
