As you lead your students through the exciting learning process that butterflies provide, here are some ways to evaluate their progress and understanding.
1. Use the following activities as
pre/post-test comparisons:
Butterfly Anatomy
Pass out the reproducible anatomy worksheet and have kids label anatomy.
Recommended for grades 1-6.
Butterfly Charades
In this activity, kids act out butterfly anatomy to learn about the parts of butterflies, how they work, and what they are used for. Use this activity at the end of your unit to see how much students remember about anatomy.
Recommended for grades K-2.
Butterfly Observer Game
This game assists in recalling butterfly facts. Have
students test each others memories! Recommended for grades 3-6.
Butterfly "What We Know And Want To Know" web
This activity not only helps kids kick off their study of butterflies by asking questions, getting curious, and forming
predictions, but it also lets them see how much
they've learned at the end of your butterfly project!
Grades 3-6 and K-2.
2. Use these projects to evaluate knowledge and creativity:
Completed Journals
Journals help
children explore the life cycle through observation, recording, and interpretation of data. You can use the Journals to help monitor student's level of participation, effort, and learning. All ages.
Invent a Butterfly
A creative way for all ages to creatively express what they've learned about butterflies.
Life Cycle Chart
This activity helps children understand the life cycle of a butterfly through all its stages. Use it again at the end of your unit to check sequencing understanding. Recommended for grades 1-4.
3. Try other evaluation ideas:
Create a spelling test of butterfly vocabulary.
Pull vocabulary, or fromWings
& Things Cards.
Keep anecdotal records.
Math and science standards at work!
Butterflies and Math
This Activity Kit compliments the experience of raising butterflies by providing you and your students with opportunities to apply estimation, measurement, and collection and organization of data. Explore the expression of relationships and other mathematical thinking skills through the use and study of graphs, charting, sequencing, counting, and symmetry.
Butterflies and Science
Butterflies give kids the opportunity to explore life science and physical science through the process of inquiry.
By asking questions, predicting, and investigating, students will use scientific tools and data to learn about characteristics of organisms, the life cycle, function, behavior,
and relationship of creatures to their environment.
