Metamorphosis Magic
Butterfly Observer Game
Grades 3-6 Activity = Science, Language Arts

A game to assist in recalling butterfly facts
Play this game with partners, or divide the class into two teams. Use this activity to learn, hone, and evaluate knowledge of butterflies, the life cycle, and anatomy.

Getting Started:

  1. Copy the Wings & Things Cards print-out. Fold each in half, and tape, staple or glue so that each one forms a two-sided card with a word on one side and a definition on the other.

  2. Explain the rules. In Butterfly Observer, the definition/statement is read, and the student must come up with the answer/word that the statement describes. For example:
Question: "These have thousands of tiny lenses that help the butterfly see in all directions."
The correct answer is "Compound eyes."

When a student answers correctly, they or their team scores a point! If the answer is incorrect, go on to the next question. At the end of all the questions, total the points.

  3. Playing with two players: Divide the cards in half, with 12 cards in each stack. Each player takes one of the stacks. One player starts by asking all the questions in their stack to the other player, then totals the number of correct answers. Then the next player asks all their questions to the other player and totals the points. Now switch stacks and do again!

(Both players have heard all the answers, so this round should be easier.) Total the points from both rounds. Put all the questions missed in a separate pile, and have partners ask each other those questions again.

  4. Playing in teams: The teacher (or a student) divides the cards into equal numbers, with one or two questions per student. Trade off asking questions to one team, and then the other team - making sure each student has a chance to answer a question. Keep track of how many answers each team gets. Now trade stacks - see how the scores increase!

  5. Evaluation: Have kids keep track of their scores over time. How much did they improve after playing once, twice, three times? Have fun!

Butterfly Observer Adaptations:
  • Make a classroom set so children can play the game during free time.

  • Create a game board on butcher paper or the chalkboard. Draw 7 spaces winding across, with a start and a finish. Have a student draw a caterpillar at the start and a butterfly at the finish. For each right answer, that team or person moves ahead one space.

  • Use the vocabulary on pages 8 and 9 to create more cards! Have each group of students create their own set, and then challenge other groups.

Adaptation for grades K-2 :

  • Designate a group of students to practice with the cards (this works best with students that are really into butterfly vocabulary, butterfly body parts, and reading). Have an older student practice with them!

  • Use the cards to label caterpillar, butterfly, or chrysalis pictures on your Butterfly Bulletin Board or the Painted Lady Life Cycle poster. (See the bulletin board activity on page 31.)
