Coral Reef Coral reefs are found in warm, clear, shallow waters of tropical oceans. They provide food and shelter for diverse fish species, and they protect shores from erosion. Reefs are formed by the calcuim produced by coral polyps, a tiny aquatic animal. Over many years, thousands of polyps build the delicate structures that support abundant sea life. Human activity and changes in their environment easily damage coral reefs.
