Ceiba Tree (Ceiba pentandra) One of the tallest trees in the rainforest, the ceiba or kapok tree grows so tall that it rises above the forest canopy. It is an essential part of the emergent layer. Its flowers open at night and are pollinated by bats. The Mayan Indians believe the ceiba holds up the sky, and when they clear the forest to grow crops, they do not cut the ceiba down. ![]() |
